NORWICH, CT -A Norwich police officer has been shot multiple times by a man police say was trying to commit suicide-by-cop.
The officer was being transferred by helicopter from Backus Hospital in Norwich to Hartford Hospital for treatment. The officer was wounded while in the building and was removed by fellow officers.
The incident began about 2:45 p.m. when police responded to 99 Cedar St. for a report of a despondent, suicidal person at the Cedar Glen apartment complex.
Officers, warned that the man was trying to have police kill him, set up a perimeter and began trying to communicate with him. A state police SWAT team responded to assist Norwich police. Shortly before 6 p.m., a second state police SWAT team was requested to respond.
About 3:55 p.m. and later, several shots were fired. That's when the Norwich officer was struck several times.
A person in the apartment also suffered a medical emergency and police were working to get that person removed.
Norwich police were looking for help from area departments to cover regular patrols in the city.
Negotiators are trying to communicate with the man, Norwich Deputy Chief Warren L. Mocek said.
