Manager says Johnny Boy "Da Prince" Taylor close to record deal with Gump Butt Records
Johnny Taylor was full of hope and promise as he left his young cousin last week.
The 23-year-old aspiring rapper had written a song for her and promised to work with her after he got back from New York City, where he was to meet with executives at Atlantic Records.
"He said as soon as he got a record deal, he was going to help me," said Chakira Walker, 13. "He told me the song was going to be a hit. . .But I didn't get a chance to see it."
Police say Taylor was shot several times in the Garfield Park neighborhood shortly before midnight Wednesday and left for dead in an alley. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his manager waited while he underwent surgery.
"The doctors first said he was going to be OK," said Dillard Florence. "Then the surgical doctors came out and said he didn't make it.
"Word is it was mistaken identity," Florence said. "He didn't deserve this to happen."
